Do Your Dogs Walk You?

I wish I could say that I knew exactly how to walk my dogs perfectly.  Okay, lets not say perfectly, let’s go with ‘correctly.’  Yes, I know the fundamentals of walking a dog, and yes, I know how to heel, cross the street, and walk past other people without having Luna lose her focus.  What I do not know is how to avoid having Luna freak out when walking past a large parked truck with its engine running, or walking on a gutter drain. Luna avoids these things at all costs (read: she panics), and in a purely frustrated state I have even resorted to picking her up and placing her on the drain grate so she will understand that she is not going to fall through and get washed away like the little rat character ‘Remy’ does in the movie “Ratatouille.”

Lets now add Penny to the pack.  I have heard that all Dachshunds pull on their leashes, and let me just say that when Penny is on her leash she pulls like she is competing in the Iditarod.  My pleas of “slow down, Penny” must translate to “Mush, mush, mush” in Dachshund-speak, and she obliges as her little feet carry her on like a sprinting rabbit.

So here I have a dog that is fairly consistent on her leash except when passing by large parked trucks and drain grates, and the other dog that behaves like a wind up toy.  What is my solution? I place them side by side and ‘pack walk’ them either on my left, or directly in front.  Something changes when I put the girls together like this; it somehow calms Luna down, and Penny tries to match Luna’s leisurely pace. All in all, it makes for a much better walk!  I hope someday to walk like the pros do – my goal is to walk like The Thundering Heard pack!  They have it down!

Another Incident

Just after a few short days of Luna’s ‘Eeew’ claw incident we find ourselves having another one. Yes, that would be another incident. After rounding up the pack from outside, I noticed that Luna was sporting a huge bump on the right side of her face. She was completely swollen up like she had been hit on the head or was suffering from some type of bite or reaction. I was able to get an appointment with our vet that afternoon and luckily our Dr. didn’t find any major break, cut, or injury of the sort. What he did find was some inflammation and bleeding at the gum line of the carnassial tooth, which could have been caused by a blunt trauma of some type. We were prescribed a round of antibiotics and if the lump or inflammation returns after treatment, then X-rays we will be taken.

Did I forget to mention that I also had to perform unprofessional yet minor surgery on her OTHER dew claw? Okay, not really surgery, but I did have to ‘remove’ it as she had apparently broken that one off too. Seriously, what is this girl doing outside? Or is she just falling apart because she will be turning three next month? Is turning three in dog years like turning 30 in human years? Things just do downhill from there?

Picture of Luna after two days of antibiotics. The swelling on the right cheek has reduced.

Introducing finley

Finley is the newest addition to my mother’s household, and OMG she is so cute and small!  My mother reports that she is not afraid of Tucker and seems to know when to duck Tuckers playful paws. Tucker is still a puppy himself (he is just eight months old) so It will be a while before they can be alone together.  Finely is doing a good job exploring her new surroundings, but does not seem interested in eating anything yet. She is however drinking water just fine. She does not like her crate at well, but if my mother is smart, she will be persistent and work with her on becoming comfortable in her sleeping den.  Luna, Penny, and I will get to meet Finley in a few weeks, and we couldn't be more excited!
