Slow Feeding Bowls

June 15, 2013
We all know that dogs who inhale large amounts of food too\nquickly can develop serious problems such as vomiting, bloat and even death. As\nof late, I\u2019ve noticed that Luna and Penny are both eating a little too quickly\nfor my comfort.  I have separated them in\nthe kitchen during feeding time, hoping to alleviate any rushing, but I\u2019m also considering\ngetting them both a food bowl that is designed to force slow eating. I have\nbeen checking out the so called \"slow down\" bowls on the market and\nthought I would do a round-up of what's out there. Here are some options I came\nacross in my search.

  1. http://weheartit.com/entry/49007661
  2. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4022360
  3. http://www.wag.com/dog/p/durapet-slow-feed-bowl-109173
  4. http://www.sheltieplanet.com/slow-feed-dog-bowls.php
  5. http://www.dogsupplies2.com/products/Black-Buster-Dog-Maze-Slow-Feed-Puzzle-Bowl.html
  6. http://www.remmeer.com/slow-feeding-small-dog-food-bowl-p-2049.html
  7. http://www.trendypet.com/elevated-dog-bowl.php?sku=16-2-sf-2qt

In the meantime I have actually flipped Penny\u2019s bowl upside\ndown when feeding her because the design of her current bowl actually produces\nthe same design and result as a slow feeding bowl. I am actually quite\nsurprised how many seconds have been added onto Penny\u2019s consumption time.  Luna\u2019s bowl is not shaped the same way, so I\nam not able to test this out on her, but I can only imagine that having a bowl\ndesigned to slow her down would actually do just that.

Do you have any experience with a slow feeding bowl?  If you do I would love to know how it works\nout for you.

Bark & Bites - Outdoor Gear

May 16, 2013

I am ready for summer are you?  The weather has been absolutely gorgeous here in my neck of the woods, and I actually had to pull out some of my warm weather clothes the other day.  All of this beautiful sunshine makes me want to spend every minute outdoors with the dogs.  I have an itch to go hiking, swimming, camping, trail blazing (what’s that?), surfing…  So it’s only appropriate that I bring you Out Door Gear Links for this week’s Bark & Bites round up!

  1. We really like this Doggy Flotation Vest with all of the different sizes and colors they come in.
  2. Looking for a unique and stylish puppy tent constructed of heavy nylon that includes a washable fleece floor mat?  Ya, we thought so.   Check out Olive to view this super cool dog tent.
  3. If you do decide to go camping this summer then you might want to pick up a Crew Oatmel Dog Jacket here.
  4. REI is the place to go for great outdoor gear, so it’s not surprising that we really love their MAX Reflective Dog Collar and Leash.
  5. Going to do some serious cold weather mountain hiking? You might want to check out these Polar Trex Winter Boots that go all the way up!

Here are some other great links I found for you!

  • House of Harvey shows you the proper gear for bug hunting in your back yard.
  • Pretty Fluffy shows you how to make your own medical kit.
  • Jessica has a great review on Musher’s Secret, Bootless Boots for your dog.
  • Two Collies & A Mutt just posted her favorite "Must Have Items".

What is your favorite must have out door gear?  Care to share any great links?  Make sure to check out Robin from Newf & Hound to see what kind of gear she has on site!
